Not everyone who comes to Bardia National Park is looking for tigers. Sure, they’re beautiful, but Bardia is home to over 400 varieties of birds. Some are here in year around, others are from Siberia who stop here on the flyovers. The beautiful Karnali River features many different varieties of water fowl. Some of these birds are only found in and around Bardia National Park.

Our basic package is three nights and four days where you walk quietly with your jungle guide in search of these beautiful winged creatures. You can even add on additional days that will take you into either the Babai River Valley or the Karnali River region for additional opportunities to sight rare birds. Come during the migratory seasons and you will find even more varieties.

Ornithologists agree that there are few places in the world that exceed Bardia National Park when it comes to bird watching. Detailed Itinerary

DAY 1 – ARRIVAL

Board your plane to Nepalgunj from Kathmandu, bringing your field glasses and long lenses in anticipation of seeing a large variety of birds. Bardia National Park never disappoints the bird watcher. The plane takes an hour to reach Nepalgunj, flying over the very backbone of the mighty Himalayas. At Nepalgunj, here you meet your professional bird watching guide who will take you west through little villages and forests to reach Babai Resort. Check in, have a welcome drink and prepare to do bird watching around 3 pm. Walking tour into the jungle. Babai Resort is located on the edge of a branch of the Karnali River where you will start to see various types of birds that are common in the Terai region of Nepal. In the evening, return for dinner and relax by the pool, listening to the quiet sounds of the jungle.

DAY 2 – BIRD WATCHING IN JUNGLE - DAY 1

Today we enter Bardia National Park on foot. Before entering the park, we have a very early breakfast so can greet the early rising birds singing in the buffer zone. We will enter the park and take our time, stopping to listen and to photograph these colorful creatures. Your guide has sharp eyes as he quietly points out the various birds that call Bardia home. Of course, if you come during migration time, you will see Siberian birds that leave the hard winters behind as they travel southward, and then return again in the spring. Enjoy a quiet boxed lunch before resuming your slow walk, stopping to look and take pictures. In the evening, return to your resort for dinner and a restful night with the night sounds of the jungle to lull you to sleep.

DAY 3 – BIRD WATCHING IN JUNGLE - DAY 2

Today we penetrate deeper into Bardia National Park where we will travel to places rarely visited by humans. These are pristine areas where we are bound to see all kinds of birds. Many shy varieties can be found in these places. We move quietly so we don’t scare the birds. Keep your camera ready for pictures of these colorful creatures. From waterfowl to eagles to warblers and songbirds, they can be found here in Bardia National Park. Of course, you may even see one of those elusive Royal Bengal Tigers or Indian One-Horned Rhinos. But our purpose is the birds, and you will see hundreds of birds each day of our experience. In the evening, enjoy a Tharu cultural show in the evening.

DAY 4 – DEPARTURE

Its time to return to Kathmandu, and after breakfast, we’ll travel back through the forests to reach Nepalgunj. Of course, if you choose to extend your trip, we can add on the above noted places for wonderful birdwatching. Each of those additional places feature their own particular variety of birds. Be sure to ask about these add on places. They are incredible to visit, with many of them rarely touched by humans. Enjoy the pristine conditions as you see some rare varieties that the Terai region of Nepal is famous for.
